Here’s a quick breakdown of my latest adventure with Sunnova Energy International Inc. (NOVA), using my beloved “free stock by double up” strategy. The goal was always to end up with free shares—and that’s exactly what happened.
The Setup
- October 31, 2023: Bought 11 shares of NOVA @ $9.11 each. Total cost: $100.20.
- February 5, 2024: Bought another 24 shares @ $4.2991 each. Total cost: $103.18.
- Total shares owned by February 9, 2024: 35 shares for a grand total of $203.38.
You can read about this thrilling middle chapter in my earlier post.
The Sale
- August 27, 2024: Sold 20 shares of NOVA @ $10.6449 each.
- Total collected: $212.89 (which means I got all my original $203.38 back plus an extra $9.51).
The Result
- Free shares gained: 15 shares of NOVA, which I now own at no cost.
- Total profit: $9.51—small change, but that’s not the real win.
The Plan: Keep Forever
The beauty of this strategy is that I achieved exactly what I set out to do: get my money back and end up with free stock. Now, I have 15 free shares of Sunnova sitting in my portfolio, and I have no reason to sell them—they didn’t cost me a penny anymore. Whatever happens next, those shares are mine to keep.
Free stock by double up strikes again!
