European Union is finding a new interesting way to finance its huge bureaucracy: they impose billion dollars sanctions on Microsoft. Yesterday they imposed one worth $1.3 Billions. A previous sanction worth $600 million was imposed a few years ago and there is a few more on the way.
Those sanctions hit an US company exporting to Europe for antitrust violations. Since US Antitrust is not charging Microsoft for the same violations, it means that Microsoft is behaving legally from US point of view.
What should a serious government do when one of its exporters is charged big dollars? US government should impose import duties for the same amount on European companies exporting to the USA.
It is too easy for European Union bureaucrats to finance themselves with sanctions on a foreign company. If European exporters had to pay duties for the same amount, maybe it would become a bit less popular to impose those sanctions, and on the larger scale of international trade, there would be a perfect balance.
